I think the original poster was asking about paid domains and the benefits of having them. The free ones, like co.cc, are frowned upon by the SE's and don't do as well. I started that way too a few years ago, but it made a huge difference when I finally made the decision to "go big".

My co.cc domain is new and after much research I discovered that google ranks co.cc domains with good content very highly. Either way, I agree that it is important to have your own domain. If your wish to pay for it!

I've never seen even one rank anywhere in North America in Google, but if it works in your country, then power to you!

Yes I did but I have a question. If you want to just mask a link with your own personal domain that will redirect to your landing page do you have to have hosting or can you just purchase a domain and have it redirected?

You don't need hosting to do a redirect, as you can set that up at your registrar, but I recommend against masking because it can mess up some purchase or signup pages from an affiliate that uses secure pages (https). It's best to just use simple, direct forwarding to ensure everything works properly.

Yes, and I think it is absolutely critical in building a trustworthy brand. Most customers I speak to are more likely to trust a unique domain name than over a website being hosted on a free service. In addition to a domain name, it is also worth investigating a signing certificate and if conducting sales with a cart or the likes, getting certified by Paypal or verisign.

Llewellyn, If you are still reading this post, is your domain still working? I found this out on the www - "The ever popular Co.CC company which provided free as well as paid Co.CC domains has closed down, without giving any warning to the customers. All the Co.CC domains are currently down and can no longer be accessed. Co.CC had stopped accepting new users some time before they closed down. Users were used to be greeted with a message saying 'A new .co.cc domain cannot be registered'."

That's good news. So many co.cc domains were associated with spam and scamming that they were getting banned everywhere anyway. I stopped accepting them for my own services. Good riddance to them.

I did purchase a domain for a year and built my own webstore, but it brought little to no traffic and only made a couple of sales. Instead I switched to eBay and have been getting daily sales. So it all depends what you are trying to do with your page.

Okay okay. You guys where correct. The co.cc domain registrar eventually went bottom up. I have now gone big but not getting the same great results in my region as I did with my co.cc domain.
