Well, i choose a MySQL as my main database for my server because it's easy to use, performance is great and can be used almost any purpose like you install CMS (e.g. WordPress). I am just personal website, you can categorized as small business, i think.

As usual... It depends. It depends on what are your choices: does your server is Linux or Windows? Most Linux apps are available for Windows users but not the other way around. Some setups make senese too: Apache, PHP & MySQL, or Windows IIS, ASP & SQL Server. But you can have Windows IIS, PHP & MySQL if you want. Also, some free web apps are strongly against MS products and that restrict your choice to Linux. I recently started to use Joomla (which requires PHP and MySQL) and had to migrate everything from SQL Server to MySQL without a problem. It seems to me that now is more a question of personal preferences, rather than which one is good.

Well i prefer MySQL for very small projects.

Bt for large projects MSSQL scores over MySQL in terms of performance.

MySQL requires a lot of tuning hereby and the maintenance is hefty.

Well PostgreSQL is somewhat good in terms of performance.

I think the consensus would be Linux. Mysql on linux hosting is lightweight, fast, and easy to use. Maybe someone with experience in the Windows environment can add some more facts to this thread- I am not really experienced with that but what I say is based on what I hear and see.
