One of the easiest things to do to promote your site is to start a link exchange program. Also make sure that your site is optimized for the keywords or phrases you are promoting. Other things you can do to promote your site without having to spend any money is to create a blog related to your site and post articles to generate traffic. You can also use Facebook and Twitter for the same purpose.

Social Networking, it works! Others mentioned it and I have to agree. Get a facebook account, add members. Get a twitter account, and follow people with similar interests. Both have worked for me in getting new readers and visitors.

Use StumbleUpon for instant traffic, it really works. For targeted traffic I think SEO, articles and forums are the best but all of them are very time consuming. I'm not sure on traffic exchanges, there are a lot stories about how the search engines really dislikes them and penalize when you use them so it's up to you. much success.

It's not difficult to promote your website, but does require patience. For the less patient, you can promote your site by purchasing Adwords and running pay per click campaigns. I, however, prefer the organic (free) approach to promoting websites. With organic SEO, you will not see results overnight; however, over the course of a couple of months (and this all depends on how much/little you put into it), you'll see the desired results if you done your homework properly. Here are some guides. FYI, at any point, if you are unsure about how to go about any of these, there are many tutorial resources on the web: 1. On page optimization. Your website needs good content that is keyword rich. Also, create keyword rich meta data. 2. Get your URL indexed on Google, Yahoo, and Bing. I usually only focus on Google, and somehow, my websites always manage doing well on Yahoo and Bing. 3. Link exchange with relevant websites. It's best to target sites that are PR3 or better. If you're a newbie, starting off with linkmarket.net might not be a bad idea just until you get going. 4. Get backlinks. Join social media networks and be sure to include your URL in your profile (this is a backlink). Communicate with your friends or followers, but always include a link back to your website. 5. Traffic! You're obviously doing something right cuz you're on Link Referral! 6. Forum posts. It's a free and easy way to connect with others, but make sure you offer good/relevant feedback...don't just promote your biz. There's much more, but this is a great start. Go with Twitter. If you haven't gotten an account, you need to get one. The object of Twitter is to get the biggest following as quick as possible. You can get the following by yourself, or you can have followe do it for you. I went with followe and in a week I had tripled my following. When you become partners you can make a boatload of money.http://followe.rs/4zts. Don't do anything until you check the site out.

Two of the ways that I promote my own site are to get involved in other sites and get your name out there, and just subtley have your site in your signature. The other ways is utilizing Twitter to update followers on current posts and things. Good luck!
