Google Ditches PageRank

"Google has quietly gotten rid of PageRank in Webmaster Tools. Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable points to a thread featuring an explanation from Google Webmaster Trends Analyst Susan Moskwa.

"We've been telling people for a long time that they shouldn't focus on PageRank so much; many site owners seem to think it's the most important metric for them to track, which is simply not true," says Moskwa. "We removed it because we felt it was silly to tell people not to think about it, but then to show them the data, implying that they should look at it."

Search marketers are wondering why Google tells people not to focus on PageRank and removes it from Webmaster Tools, but still keeps it in the Google Toolbar. "Back in 2007, Google wanted feedback on removing PageRank from the Toolbar," says Schwartz. "I felt it was a good idea but the idea died out. Google cannot remove PageRank from the Toolbar, it is too much of their branding. No matter how much Matt Cutts and the Google search quality and webmaster trends team want it removed, I cannot see Google's executives allowing it."

Andy Beal of Marketing Pilgrim says the role of PageRank has been reduced to nothing more than a "comfort blanket for SEO Noobs." He adds, "I say this, with a high degree of confidence that most experienced SEOs pour over the data in Google Webmaster Tools, whereas those new to the industry likely let the toolbar be their only guiding light."

He also notes, however, that PageRank data can still be useful. For example, it can be a good indicator of a site's behavior in Google's index. "Any green means 'go.' No green, means there's something to investigate," says Beal.

Despite this usefulness though, Moskwa pretty much closes the case on Google's position on it. In fact, she even points to a FAQ page about crawling, indexing, and ranking, which says that webmasters shouldn't even bother thinking about it. It also says that PageRank is just one of over 200 signals that can affect how your site is crawled, indexed, and ranked."

Thank you ! Excellent post. Sadly though, people will still think that PR is something to worry about or strive for.

LOL, you are so right Robert ! Both of us have been telling LR members over and over again that PR ( linking) is not needed for a search engine placement and yes, we have been telling LR members that for two years now. But, alas, people will still want to listen to the old time gurus that NEVER update their SE information. LOL, or they read articles that are over two years old !

LOL Asmodeus, I should have added you as one of the SEO teachers! Or should I say, SEO Preachers...

You, Robert and I ( we used to have David ) have been the only consistent preachers in the LR SE forum for two years now. LR Mike should give us gold medals !!! David has taken a temp leave of absence, he got tired of the nonsense in the LR forums.

The weather here in Georgia USA is mild, with overcast skies ( looks like rain). LOL, Kinda describes the LR forums !

Not in the SERP's. It has been like that for well over two years now. I saw the changes start at the end of 2007, when google announced then that reciprocal linking was of no use anymore. And Google just made the PR changes public recently, even though it has been like that for awhile.

See, that is the way Google is, they keep you on your webmaster toes, by making you figure out the changes they make way BEFORE they make it public. That is one of the reasons why you should manually check out the SE's and their results pages, ever so often. And not just to see where your site is at, but to actually look at what is happening within the SE itself. To many people rely on software to give them the answers, when in reality you should be using your eyes and let your brain do the thinking !

UPDATE on the Traffic Frog/Toad/TROLL..whatever

Being the spiteful child that he is, using one of his alias' he decided to try and trash my site by giving me a review. He gave me a score of 1 with all thumbs down and a nonsense comment.

Under another alias, he used the worst swear words possible in a forum.

This very nasty little boy has been turned in to Administration and hopefully all his sites will be banned from LR.

As stated in the article, PR is still used as a "Comfort Blanket" for SEO Noobs.

I am sure that PR will also stay as a indicator to potential advertisers as to how popular the site is. That is one of the main reasons that google created PR.

It simply removed PR form webmaster tools, nothing much. I don't think they will get rid of the entire PR process. Because it is part of there serp algorithm.

indirectly google wants webmaster to improve quality and stop building links for PR

Means....what exactly?.....in a nutshell please

That PR ( page ranking) has NOTHING to do with how your site will show up in the search engine results page ( SERP) for your keywords. You can have a PR0 and still show up as number one for your keywords.

Are you threatening me ? Cashto/Michael - I know exactly who you are, that includes your full name - you know, that I know who you are. You threaten me or my site again I will report you to your host and to your internet provider and file a criminal complaint. You can not threaten people over the internet without repercussions.

My suggestion is that you leave well enough alone...

this fool believes he is untouchable, he has already committed several Internet crimes that are punishable. I have been thinking about going ahead with my part and filing a federal complaint against him, it is funny that 8 of my web sits came down the other day when he started his rants and threats. He has already threatened Mary with a " Dos attack", in an above reply, which Mary needs to report to her ISP. Threatening someone with a Dos attack is a federal crime. The place to report him and this thread is : " Internet Crime Center" at : http://www.ic3.gov

Since its inception, the IC3 has received complaints crossing the spectrum of cyber crime matters, to include online fraud in its many forms including Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) matters, Computer Intrusions (hacking), Economic Espionage (Theft of Trade Secrets), Online Extortion, International Money Laundering, Identity Theft, and a growing list of Internet facilitated crimes. Since June 2000, it has become increasingly evident that, regardless of the label placed on a cyber crime matter, the potential for it to overlap with another referred matter is substantial. Therefore, the IC3, formerly known as the Internet Fraud Complaint Center (Internet Fraud Complaint Center), was renamed in October 2003 to better reflect the broad character of such matters having an Internet, or cyber, nexus referred to the IC3, and to minimize the need for one to distinguish "Internet Fraud" from other potentially overlapping cyber crimes.

I see nothing about DoS, blowing smoke is great and BTW, you would not have any proof of anything, because it is not traceable. It's called bots, proxies, and exploits.

Maybe I should report you old hags for harassment, that's what your doing...
