how many keywords

"are you better to have a lot of keywords covering a wider spread or a few that only cover a smaller search area.

This is a good question. I have never figured it out. I have used both short and long keyword strings, but it is difficult to guess how people are searching for the kind of content that I write about so I usually just stick mostly with between 5 to 10 short keywords.

It depends on your content. If the content is new and trending and have less life span then use more keywords on it.

Long tailed keywords specific to your niche work well and have less competition than shorter, broader terms.

To some businesses, that might not seem a lot, but targeting 5 keywords doesn't mean that your website will only rank for 5 keywords and get traffic from 5 keywords. This is because a keyword phrase with the same words in a different order, or with more or less ?stop words? (a, the, for, etc.), counts as one keyword.

Generally speaking ever word written in your content is a keyword. Find a good keyword to base your info from and continue your writing

Therefore, although the individual search volumes for very long-tail keywords might seem trivial, the combined total of them is far from it. So, with a 5 keyword starting point, the scope for rankings and attracting traffic is actually quite wide.

i thought (or what i've studied) that it's better to have a clear and concise direction to go with keywords... make it specific to your product or service using multiple keywords that are related.

I use both the Google Keywords Planner and SemRush to get an idea of the search volume. Given decent basics (high demand, low competition), my experience thus far is that the length and quality of the content is crucial in determining the post's impact with the search engines.

Keep a narrow focus with long tailed keywords that specifically pertain to your content that visitors would search for.

i'm not sure what you mean... we need more details to help you. keywords are so important but usage is top priority. keep keywords pertaining to your subject, while still making it look natural (as if you are talking to someone) - so what do you mean by "wider or smaller search area"?
