Etsy or ebay?

"I have a full time job and I create handmade necklaces as a hobby. I cannot maintain and fully advertise a store on ebay AND a shop on etsy at the same time. I tend to think I should choose to remain on etsy, but what do you think?"

a lot has changed from when you posted this... i have gone to strictly etsy because it's hard to make sales on eBay. people are cheap and go to eBay to get a "deal" regardless of the quality. i make dog clothing and if i list something at my cost of materials (not counting my time), i might sell it on eBay - the people shopping on etsy have a better understanding on what goes into hand crafted products and know that they are getting what they pay for - hope by now you have found what works best for you. :)

Also it's cheaper than Ebay when it comes to fees...

We have remained on Etsy for a year and have done well. I have been also maintaining an Ebay Store front which has done ok. You are right though, there is much work involved in advertising and maintaining the store. Good luck!

I'm not sure anymore and I may just give ebay a try, eggs all in one basket may not be a good idea...etsy is very slow right now, doesn't appear to be enough actual buyers, not giving up just may branch out to ebay and other sites as well.

Etsy seems really slow for me, I haven't tried ebay yet (other than shopping on it!) But I think it might get more viewers because it ismore popular world wide.

It seems like itsy is an up and come site which hopefully will grow in popularity. Those who sell there may build a reputation and a following. It's good to get advice from those are succeeding there.

Definitely, and I'm sure Etsy's prices are way lower than eBay's!

Here's an idea... instead of using either one, create your own site with paypal and other payment options. Just a thought, otherwise I would go with ebay, just because it has a much larger audience and more exposure. You could also use social networking to get more exposure, if you decide on creating your own site that is.

We have tried Ebay with handemade items and we have not faired too well. It might be a good options for others. I think it depends on the market.

If the ebay store is not already successful, it's not worth keeping it up...

I agree with you. With either store it will take time to gain exposure and direct traffic to your stores. I think that each site has their advantages and disadvantages. I like Etsy for our crafting items. We tried Ebay for a few and it is (in my opinion) they best site for craft items (like crochet afghans, etc.). I do spend about an hour a day advertising our Etsy items.

I buy Artisan items from eBay...I have bought via etsy, but some sellers shipping is way out of line and some have taken weeks to ship the item even though they state that they will ship asap. Many items I have bought on etsy were not as pictured and/or described and frankly were shoddily made for the price paid. I have never had that problem with any Artists on eBay in the 10 years I have bought there. I have bought a few items from Artfire and have never had a problem with the items and would say I was 100% satisfied with the cost of shipping, timely manner of shipping and the quality of the Artisan piece for the price paid. I do not mind paying good money or top dollar for a good Artisan piece. So Artfire and eBay get an A+ from a buyers viewpoint, moi!

I honestly can not stand Ebay all I have ever gotten was a hassle. I much prefer Etsy. The shoppers and sellers I feel are different and much nicer. The energy that goes into Ebay is a full time job in itself, and depending on what your selling you don't get much back from.

i would LIKE to use all my resources for etsy because its such an amazing tool - almost prestigious! ive been on etsy for about three months and i have great hopes for it - its slowly starting to take off... however my ebay site is MUCH more lucrative, greater traffic and more sales - but more fees. i found a great ebay managing tool in auctiva.com.

I have an etsy store but have been putting all of my time and effort into Zazzle. How many products should you have in your Etsy store to see some income coming out of it? Assuming of course you have good quality items.
